For us and the planet.

Final energy consumption in Cyprus was higher in 2018 than in 2000. This trend is mainly due to the increase in energy demand in transport and buildings (residential and commercial). In contrast, the contribution of industry to energy consumption decreased, both due to the gradual reduction of the percentage of industry in the total economic activity, and the improvement of the energy efficiency of large industrial units.

Energy efficiency in the building sector of Cyprus began to improve steadily since the mid-2000s due to the adoption of energy efficiency regulations through the implementation of the relevant EU legislation. Despite this, energy consumption for heating purposes continues to increase, as the increasing number of buildings, the increasing size of housing and the increased use of space heating systems in modern buildings outweigh improvements in energy efficiency.

Space heating

  1. In the evening, close the shutters and curtains.
  2. Open the curtains or shutters of the windows facing south, during the day.

Air conditioning

  1. Choose air conditioners and heating systems with high energy efficiency.
  2. Set the thermostat not below 26-27o C.
  3. Prefer ceiling fans.

Lighting

  1. Replace incandescent light bulbs with energy-saving alternatives.
  2. Put lamps of lesser power in corridors, utility rooms and places that you do not use often.
  3. Install motion or light sensors where applicable.
  4. Do not forget to turn off the lights when leaving a room.
  5. Prefer natural lighting over artificial lighting wherever possible

Appliances

  1. Purchases a new electrical appliance of high energy class (B, C, D – based on the new EU energy labels)
  2. Turn off electrical appliances from the main switch (ON/OFF), not from the remote control (Stand-by).
  3. Once you have charged your mobile, unplug the charger.
